COVID-19 has caused confusion in counting college students in the correct location. Many parents are counting their children as living at home because semesters were cut short and students moved home prior to April 1 (Census Day). Here are two facts that will help you determine where to count your college student.
- Students who live in off-campus housing during the school year should be counted as living in that residence, even if they moved home during the quarantine.
- Students who live on-campus during the school year are included in the group quarters reports the Census Bureau receives from colleges and universities and do not need to be counted at the family residence.
Concerned that your college student may have been counted twice? Not to worry, the Census Bureau can work that out and no further action is required on your part.
