“Undercover Bromance” by Lyssa Kay Adams
Review by Jennifer McClear, library technician at the Peapack-Gladstone branch
Braden Mack (Mack to his friends) owns several bars and nightclubs, drives a Porsche SUV, knows how to woo women and also reads romance novels. He is part of a 10-member men’s book club. Mack’s the last of them to still be single, but hopes to change that. He pulls out all the stops (expensive restaurant by reservation only with champagne and the signature dessert) for Gretchen whom he had been dating for several months. Unfortunately, it all goes south, including the dessert landing on Gretchen’s lap.
This does not bode well for pastry chef Olivia (Liv) as she was the presenter of the dessert. Needless to say, her celebrity chef boss Royce Preston was not impressed. Royce puts on a good show for everyone in the public eye, but behind closed doors it’s a completely different story. Liv wants revenge. She wants to take her ex-boss down but wants to do it her way. But with very little leverage, she has no choice but to turn to Mack for help. Once he finds out the damsel is in distress, he’s ready to be the hero. One problem though — Liv is very headstrong, stubborn and mostly independent.
Will Liv finally get the revenge she wants? Has Mack finally met his match in Liv? Will Liv allow Mack to be her protector or will they learn to give and take evenly?
This is the second in a series; I have found that they can be read as standalones. Even though the characters are the same throughout, there are a few references from the first novel. But the references are subtle in the sense that the reader won’t be lost if they haven’t read them in order. The third in the series is “Crazy Stupid Bromance” with the fourth, “Isn’t It Bromantic?” just released.
