The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Evelyn Hugo is a Hollywood icon. She calls a famous fashion magazine and asks for one of the junior writers by name. That writer, Monique Grant, can’t believe her luck. She thinks she’s getting a feature for the magazine about the gowns Hugo is selling off for charity. Instead she is handed the opportunity of a lifetime: writing the biography of the reclusive starlet. Hugo promises to finally tell the truth about all of her husbands, after all everyone involved has died so why not tell all? But can the world, and Monique, handle her truth?
I have a confession to make. My home book group picked this book and I was less than thrilled. I’m not a big fan of Hollywood gossip so I figured I’d be struggling through this book since I knew as much as I’ve just told you about the story. Don’t read any other reviews! They may spoil it for you! This book is more than it appears, there are lots of important issues brought up in the book that make for a really good discussion. The writing is gossipy in tone so it is fast paced and once you start learning about each husband you can’t help but want to know more about the next one. There is a twist and none of us in my book group saw it coming. For fans of Hollywood, gossip magazines, interesting lives and life as messy and mysterious as it can be.
