The Secretary by Renee Knight
Christine Butcher is a perfect secretary. When she is offered a position to work for Mina Appleton, a high powered executive of a supermarket chain and a television celebrity, she knows she has found the perfect job. Christine knows that discretion, accuracy and a bit of mind reading are essential in her job and she performs her job very well. Her job is her life. There comes a time when the job is the only thing in her life because her job it seems has taken over her every waking minute. Christine is completely loyal to Mina, but is it a two way street?
I thought this would be a very different book. The blurbs I read talked about obsession and yes, Christine is obsessed with being the perfect secretary. She lives and breathes her work but there is nothing sinister in it. I only saw her life as sad giving her life up for a woman I felt was unworthy of her admiration and devotion.
