Plan Ahead for Your Dream Vacation — Learn a New Language!
Created by Yvonne Selander, collection development librarian
While I can’t visit my happy place right now, I can dream about traveling to Iceland again. All that time I would normally spend traveling and stuck on a plane? I can download the Mango Languages app on my phone and start learning how to converse in Icelandic. Once I verified that I was a library patron with my library card and created an account, I was good to go! Why create an account? So Mango Languages can save my progress, and I can pick up where I left off.
Mango Languages offers lessons for more than 70 world languages, and some include special content about etiquette, slang, superstitions, and vocabulary for business. If you would like to learn English, or improve your English, there are courses for more than 20 source languages. They are designed for developing speaking skills and feature special vocabulary lessons about business, texting and job seeking.
What are other Somerset County Library System patrons learning? The top two languages are Latin American Spanish for English speakers and English for Latin American Spanish speakers — I think that’s pretty cool. Rounding out the top 10 languages studied by SCLSNJ patrons are: French, Mandarin Chinese, Italian, German, Japanese, Hindi, Spanish (Castilian), and Tagalog.
