Outside” by Ragnar Jónasson

Review by Yvonne Selander, collection development librarian

Four friends set off to hunt ptarmigan in the Icelandic highlands when an unexpected blizzard engulfs them. Thankfully, one of the friends is an experienced guide and knows where a shelter is nearby. But when they finally manage to get inside, breaking into the lockbox, they realize they are not alone. But maybe the true danger isn’t the weather or the unknown but within the hunting party.

You know something isn’t quite right with these “friends” from the get-go, and the author switches between each character’s point of view with every chapter. As a reader you don’t know who to empathize with because as soon as you feel one character has been wronged…let’s just say you will keep changing your mind. A quick listen because I had to know what happened next. For fans of psychological thrillers who don’t mind disliking everyone at the end.
