National Comic Book Day
Created by Linda Tripp, collection development librarian
Not to be confused with Free Comic Book Day, which takes place every year on the first Saturday of May, National Comic Book Day is celebrated on September 25. According to the folks at National Day Calendar, this day “honors the art, artists, and stories of comic books.”
Take a peek behind the panels and off the page with books on creating your own comics, graphic novels or manga. Explore the history of American comics and learn about the artists, writers, iconic and lesser-known characters, bitter rivalries and impact on culture and society with these books:
- “All of the Marvels: A Journey to the Ends of the Biggest Story Ever Told” by Douglas Wolk
- “American Comics: A History” by Jeremy Dauber
- “Empire of the Superheroes: America’s Comic Book Creators and the Making of a Billion-Dollar Industry” by Mark Cotta Vaz
- “Invisible Men: The Trailblazing Black Artists of Comic Books” by Ken Quattro
- “Latinx Superheroes in Mainstream Comics” by Frederick Luis Aldama
- “Slugfest: Inside the Epic Fifty-Year Battle Between Marvel and DC” by Reed Tucker
- “Why Comics?: From Underground to Everywhere” by Hillary L. Chute
