Look Up! The Allure of Architectural Sculpture
Created by Yvonne Selander, collection development librarian
When was the last time you walked down a street in a city or town and looked up? I’m going to challenge you to look up in any city or town you visit, even one you visit on a regular basis, and see what you’ve been missing. When I started bird watching I started looking up more, and it’s amazing all the interesting things I’ve been missing. I’ve found marble lions’ heads, old bank sirens and yes, even gargoyles in my town that have been there for over a hundred years looking down on me, yet I never looked up at them.
Join photographer Mathew Duman on a “grotesque safari” traveling to 10 universities around the country (including Princeton University) to photograph the unique grotesques and gargoyles roosting on their academic buildings on January 20 at 7 p.m. To register and for more information, click here.
