For Kids and Their Grown-Ups: “Lovely Day” by Bill Withers and Skip Scarborough; illustrated by Olivia Duchess
Review by Laura Frantz, collection development librarian
One of music’s most recognizable songs serves as the inspiration for a joyous new picture book. “Lovely Day,” based on the Bill Withers hit, celebrates all the wonderful ways to enjoy the day even when your plans may suddenly go awry. A brother and sister spend the day together and always find a reason to smile even if the playground is closed or a sunny day turns rainy. Olivia Duchess’ illustrations beautifully reflect the tune’s uplifting lyrics, and you instantly feel the love between the siblings. Their happiness is contagious and jumps right off the pages. An ideal book for kicking off the new year and a perfect way to introduce the classic song to a new generation. You can find similar titles in our Books That Sing carousel on our catalog page.
