For Kids and Their Grown-Ups: “I Absolutely, Positively Love My Spots” by Lid’ya C. Rivera; illustrated by Niña Mata
Review by Laura Frantz, collection development librarian
In joyful prose, a young girl with vitiligo celebrates her skin. Brimming with self-confidence, she shares how the spots make her feel strong and truly one of a kind. Reveling in the love of her parents and feeling connected to a large group of friends, she rocks her spots. And her ebullience is wonderful to behold.
“I Absolutely, Positively Love My Spots” is based on Lid’ya C. Rivera’s own experiences, and she includes a powerful author’s note at the end. Niña Mata’s artwork perfectly captures the story’s positive vibe and will immediately draw in readers. This is an outstanding and much needed addition to our picture book shelves.
