For Kids and Their Grown-Ups: “Hamsters Make Terrible Roommates” by Cheryl B. Klein; illustrated by Abhi Alwar
Review by Laura Frantz, collection development librarian
Henry and Marvin are roommates. They have been living together for 205 looong days. Marvin is quite chatty particularly when Henry is eating, running and reading. Sometimes Henry hides, but Marvin always finds him. On day 206, Henry reaches his breaking point, and it is not pretty. While Henry revels in his new-found solitude, Marvin approaches him to make amends. And soon the two are able to communicate and come up with a plan that works for both of them. Day 207 is a promising, fresh start.
Author Cheryl B. Klein perfectly captures the struggles between introverts and extroverts and demonstrates how the art of compromise can create a mutually beneficial solution. Illustrator Abhi Alwar’s animated and expressive duo will appeal to young readers who can easily relate to all the emotions on display. This is a great choice for classroom read alouds and storytimes.
