For Kids and Their Grown-Ups: “Bodies Are Cool” by Tyler Feder
Created by Laura Frantz, collection development librarian
Tyler Feder fills a much-needed void in the world of picture books with this joyous and unabashed celebration of the body. The illustrations are wonderful, completely engaging and filled with so many well-thought-out details. Freckles, stubble, scars, stretch marks, all shapes, all sizes, all shades, and all ages are on display in scenes at the park, pumpkin patch, picnic, pool and more.
The text with its sing-song style and repeated refrains further enhances the celebratory nature of the title. “Bodies Are Cool” is an exemplary way for kids and grown-ups to see themselves reflected in the pages as well as giving them an expanded view of the outside world. A timely release about body positivity and acceptance.
