Come on in: There’s a Party in This Book! by Jamie Michalak; illustrated by Sabine Timm

Review by John Mullarkey, youth services library assistant at the Hillsborough Library

Lemon is out looking for a party – and after not finding it – she decides to have her own party and invites everyone that she ran into during her quest. This is an “instant favorite” story about inclusion by Jamie Michalak and an equally fun book to read and share – for multiple readings. The artwork by Sabine Timm is a clever collection of clay objects, small trinkets, colorful household items, toys, and other media (think “I Spy” books). It is a treat for the eyes.

I read through this book a number of times and found “something new” on each reading. The rhyming text of characters includes fruits in suits, pigeons named Fred along with a kitchen for cake and bread. All ages will get a kick out of Lemon’s travels and the “friends” she meets and especially how all those “friends” get together to celebrate – it’s a party for everyone, especially the reader!
