It’s time to root, root, root for the home team with the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey (SCLSNJ) and the Somerset Patriots. On August 27 at 7 p.m., SCLSNJ will partner with the Somerset Patriots for a special Library Night at the Ballpark to celebrate the conclusion of SCLSNJ’s Summer Reading Challenge.
“Who says people are reading less? So far, over 8,000 Somerset County residents have registered for the Library’s Summer Reading Challenge,” said Brian Auger, county library administrator. “With numbers up almost 20 percent, and summer just beginning to really heat up, we’re setting that myth aside.”
According to Scholastic and YouGov, 62 percent of children and teens ages 6-17 enjoy reading books over the summer, and nine out of 10 children are more likely to finish a book they selected themselves.
“For our summer reading challenge, the goal is to encourage children and teens to read more and to have fun while doing it,” said Carolann DeMatos, director of marketing and public relations. “One of our librarians, Meredith Hoyer, always says that if you want a child to love reading, you have to let them read what interests them – even if that means your kid picks out a book on a silly subject. Luckily, SCLSNJ has a robust, ever-growing collection and our librarians are always available to help find more books on whatever subject interests you. For example, if your child loves baseball and STEM – like our pal, Sparkee – then our librarians have compiled this amazing list. And, once you have read all these books, stop by one of our 10 branches and we will find even more books for you to enjoy.”
Hit a home run with these baseball-themed recommended reads by SCLSNJ’s expert librarians:
- “Who’s On First” by Bud Abbott
- “Goodbye, Mr. Spalding” by Jennifer R. Barr
- “The Science of Baseball With Max Axiom, Super Scientist” by David Louis Dreier
