Awakened by James S. Murray and Darren Wearmouth
The inaugural run of the new subway line running from Jersey City to Manhattan is going exactly as planned. The mayor, the President and dignitaries are at the midway point under the Hudson River in the Visitor’s Pavilion, a complex of high-end stores and restaurants, the jewel of the new project. The mayor’s wife and other dignitaries are taking the three minute ride to the Pavilion from Jersey City and the timer is counting down their arrival. Voice communication with the train cuts off a little over a minute into the run but no one is too concerned until the clock starts reaches five minutes. Then the train slowly comes into the station. Not only is the train without power, the first car is ripped open and there is blood everywhere. No one is on the train. And the terror is just beginning for the people in the Pavilion.
You know this book is fiction because why would something so brilliant as a high speed train ever run between NJ and NYC? But I digress. This is an action book with good guys and villains; spies and conspiracies; characters you love, hate, and can’t figure out if you should trust, and best of all? Diesel trains and monsters! Yep. This is a monster book and they are scary. (The trains are just cool.) This is a fast paced action thriller with copious amounts of blood. Not at all for the squeamish.
Audiobook fans that enjoy good Brooklyn and New York accents may enjoy this one but you also need a stomach for descriptive gore. It’s one thing to read about evisceration when you can skim the page, another when you have to listen to every detail.
