2017 Eclipse Across America

Shoot for the Stars with SCLSNJ

Author Norman Vincent Peale famously said, “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.” This summer, SCLSNJ will revel in the stars as we celebrate the largest star – our Sun.

On August 21, a total solar eclipse will be visible on a narrow track across the United States, stretching from Oregon to South Carolina; an eclipse of this magnitude has not been seen in this country since 1918. Although New Jersey will experience a partial eclipse, there is still much to see, learn, and experience at your library.

Author David Baron will dive into Thomas Edison’s 1878 eclipse journey in his book, “American Eclipse;” Hillsborough resident Michael Dean Lewis Ph.D. will share his experiences working with NASA as their Solar System Ambassador; Raritan Valley Community College’s StarLab will visit two communities; and much more. Join SCLSNJ for an out of this world opportunity.

SCLSNJ’s library branches will distribute free eclipse viewing glasses to safely observe the Great American Solar Eclipse on August 21. Additionally, on August 21, starting at 1 p.m. the following libraries will be connecting to NASA TV to live stream the eclipse as it makes its way from Oregon to South Carolina: Bridgewater, Hillsborough, Manville, North Plainfield, and Warren Twp.

SCLSNJ was selected through a registration process managed by the STAR Library Education Network (STAR_Net) and its NASA @ My Library project. The 2017 Solar Eclipse project is funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation through Grant GBMF5373 to the Space Science Institute. SCLSNJ would like to thank the Planetarium at Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) for donating free tickets to planetarium shows or Laser Light concerts. Tickets will be raffled at eclipse-related programs for children.
